    Sustainability, climate protection and environment

Sustainability, climate protection and our environment are crucial for our future. The global importance of these issues has reached everyone in recent years, be it on a political, private or economic level.

MOCOM is aware of its responsibility as a global company, as an employer, as a manufacturer and as a local neighbor. As a member of a family-owned group of companies with a history stretching back more than 100 years, we use our creative freedom to ensure that future generations also have an environment worth living in.

In doing so, we focus on both small steps, for example energy saving - "Turn off when not needed!" - as well as larger measures, for example plastic recycling - "Let's close the material loop!"

We support the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) adopted by the United Nations and use them as guidelines for the progressive and targeted development of our company. We work together with the Otto Krahn Group Sustainability Council, which coordinates this process across the Group.  With the help of a materiality analysis, we have identified and selected 11 of the 17 goals that we as the Otto Krahn Group can particularly influence. As a result, SDGs 1, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 12, 13, 14 and 17 play a particularly important role for us.
The Paris Climate Agreement was adopted on December 12, 2015 at the UN Climate Change Conference in Paris (COP 21) and provides for limiting man-made global warming to well below 2 °C above pre-industrial levels. The signatory countries are striving to limit the temperature increase to 1.5 °C above pre-industrial levels. This is intended to significantly reduce the risks and impacts of climate change.

As MOCOM, we stand behind the goals of the Paris Climate Agreement (COP 21) and are currently developing our strategy for a path to a climate-neutral future.

Back in 2014, we successfully realized the ISO 50001 - Energy Management certification. Since then, we have also been pursuing ambitious energy-saving targets and have switched our production sites in Hamburg, Zülpich and Obernburg to electricity from 100 percent renewable sources since 2022. This will further improve the carbon footprint of our products and our production sites and make an important contribution to climate protection.

The Operation Clean Sweep® (OCS) program was initiated by the Plastics Industry Association (PLASTICS) and the Plastics Division of the American Chemistry Council (ACC). Companies from across the plastics value chain are committed to doing their part to keep the environment clean by curbing pellet losses. As part of the plastics processing industry, we see ourselves as having a particular obligation in this regard and have set up our "No Pellet Loss" initiative. To prevent pellets from entering sewers or bodies of water, we implement various measures at our sites: For example, paths and roads on the company premises have been equipped with demarcation screens. Furthermore, catch basins installed under silo connections and street drains equipped with screens prevent granules from entering the sewage system. Regular training courses for employees are intended to raise awareness of the need for careful handling of granules and complete the package of measures.
“Positive Plastics” is an international initiative with a broad network of participating companies, which aims to make particularly sustainable plastics accessible to new target groups or a broader public. The project includes a sample kit that presents the advantages of plastic types with a reduced ecological footprint in an easy-to-understand way and includes material samples. It addresses in particular to engineers, designers and product managers and includes a total of 16 PCR, PIR, bio-based, bio-composite and mass-balanced plastics from various manufacturers. With Altech ECO® PA66 in high-grade Near-To-Prime recycling quality and Cellidor® CP 410-10, two materials from MOCOM's portfolio are represented there.

All MOCOM production sites worldwide receive the ISO 14001 certification for sustainable environmental management. With our environmental management, we make an important contribution to resource conservation. Compliance with and fulfillment of environmental standards in accordance with German and European law is a matter of course for us. In addition, we are guided by the relevant global regulations in the area of environmental and chemicals law. With the environmental policy of the Otto Krahn Group, guidelines and general obligations have been stipulated that must be observed in all business activities.
Yes, we successfully introduced the ISO 50001 - Energy Management certification back in 2014. Since then, we have continued to pursue ambitious goals in energy saving.

Our entrepreneurial activities are based on the economical and efficient use of energy: We want to systematically reduce energy consumption and the associated negative environmental impact and thus live up to our individual responsibility for climate protection. These concerns are reflected in the guidelines of our cross-company energy policy. Saving energy also depends on the behavior of all employees. We therefore regularly raise our employees' awareness of possible energy savings in their areas.

We have switched our production sites in Hamburg, Zülpich and Obernburg to electricity from 100 percent renewable sources since the beginning of 2022. This will further improve the carbon footprint of our products and our production sites and make another important contribution to climate protection.

    Sustainable MOCOM Products

In parallel with our corporate goals and principles, we already have an established portfolio of products with up to 100% recycled polymer content with our ECO product lines, which we will continue to expand. New product developments with bio-based polymers are under evaluation.
This also applies to the increasing share of recycled packaging materials, which we intend to further increase at all our sites.
We have started to gradually assess the carbon footprint of our products using Sphera's Life Cycle Assessment software (GaBi) in order to provide our customers and partners with reliable information on the life cycle and sustainability of our products.
In principle, yes. Where available, the confirmations for this can be retrieved via the MOCOM website. 🡪 Link zum Downloadbereich Material Compliance & Environment.
Currently, the focus is on PA, PP and PC polymers. In addition, there are corresponding blends such as PC+ABS. Further possibilities and applicable raw materials can be discussed in a personal appointment.
For the time being, our focus with Altech ECO® products is on mechanical recycling. In addition, chemical recycling and bio-based compounds can also be developed, which can currently be found under the product name ALFATER® XL ECO and Cellidor.
Alfater XL® ECO uses a bio-based EPDM and a post-industrial PP, which are then cross-linked to produce the finished compound. The ratios are adjusted to the required degree of shore hardness and compound abilities.
In most cases we distinguish between PIR (Post Industrial) or PCR (Post Consumer) sources. Depending on customer requirements and polymer, the appropriate sources can then be selected to meet the challenges of the respective customer application.
The proportion of recycled polymer can vary depending on the material and application. Depending on the compound, our materials consist of up to 100% recycled raw material in terms of polymer content.
Yes, MOCOM uses the Life Cycle Assessment software - GaBi from the company Sphera, which, in addition to calculating the environmental impact of various products, also includes a well established database to ensure comparable calculations. With these tools and the know-how in the field of compounding, appropriate calculations can be made for all our materials. The calculations are based on the specifications of ISO 14040.

Act on Corporate Due Diligence in Supply Chains

The German Supply Chain Due Diligence Act obliges German companies above a certain size to create transparency regarding the production conditions of their suppliers and to minimize the risk of violations of human rights and environmental regulations.

    It includes, among other things:

    • Measures against corruption
    • Measures against child labor, forced labor, and slavery
    • Measures against discrimination, in particular on the grounds of national or ethnic origin, social background, health status, disability, sexual orientation, age, gender, political opinion, or religion
    • Ensuring the payment of a living wage
    • Measures against environmental pollution

Detailed information can be found in the document published in the Federal Law Gazette at the following link:

Yes, MOCOM has been subject to this regulation since January 1, 2024.

The Otto Krahn Group has fully implemented the requirements of the German Supply Chain Due Diligence Act (LkSG) and firmly integrated them into its business processes. The objective is to systematically identify and assess human rights and environmental risks along our supply chain and, where necessary, to take appropriate preventive and remedial measures.

The implementation and further development of the LkSG requirements are carried out in close cooperation between the departments Group Sustainability & QHSE Systems, Procurement, and Compliance.

Our due diligence management system includes in particular:

    • Policy statement
    • Risk analysis
    • Preventive and remedial measures
    • Complaints mechanism
