MOCOM supports "Positive Plastics" initiative with new material samples

Hamburg, November 15, 2022. For the second time in a row, MOCOM is part of "Positive Plastics", an initiative that makes sustainable plastics accessible to the broad public. The project includes a sample kit that presents the benefits of plastic types with reduced environmental footprints in an understandable way and includes material samples. It is aimed in particular at people in engineering, design and product management. In addition to the materials in Kit 1, MOCOM now provides two more materials, Alfater XL® ECO and Altech® ECO PP.

Alfater XL® ECO is a thermoplastic vulcanizate (TPV) based on post-industrial recyclate (rPP) and bio-EPDM that has a carbon footprint up to 60 percent lower than virgin material. Due to its softness and high flexibility, this material is an ecological yet technical alternative to many typical rubber applications such as gaskets. Stiffer properties are offered by Altech® ECO PP, which is made from rPP and 30 percent glass fiber. Despite its recycled content, the material is easy to color and features a 50 percent lower carbon footprint compared to virgin material. Uses for these compounds range from garden tools to storage containers or toolboxes.

"MOCOM now has a total of four different materials in the Positive Plastics kits. This shows the variety of ECO materials we can already offer for technical applications," says Stefan Zepnik, Director Technical Service Center at MOCOM. "With this initiative, we are supporting the plastics industry's transformation to a more sustainable industry."

This year, MOCOM sustainable orientation was awarded Gold by the EcoVadis rating agency for the second time in a row. With a focus on reducing CO2 emissions and fostering recycling and the circular economy, the compounder is aligned with the United Nations' Agenda 2030 and the European Commission's Green Deal.
