Hamburg, September 10, 2024. Following their successful collaboration on the Fairphone 4, MOCOM has once again teamed up with Fairphone to enhance the sustainability of the eco-friendly mobile phones. In the latest Fairphone 5 model, the companies are continuing their commitment to sustainability by incorporating Altech® PC ECO, a material made entirely from recycled plastic, for the detachable back cover.

Fairphone, a Dutch electronics company, is dedicated to creating smartphones that prioritize environmental and social sustainability across their entire supply chain. This commitment extends to reducing the CO2 footprint and ensuring durability for all components of the Fairphone. Altech® PC ECO from MOCOM has emerged as the ideal solution for the detachable back cover, as it is composed entirely of post-consumer recycled (PCR) plastics. This material choice reduces the Global Warming Potential (GWP) of the smartphone case by 80% compared to using primary materials. Additionally, the recycled material boasts high impact resistance, ensuring that the Fairphone 5 can withstand falls from significant heights, thus contributing to its longevity.

Joe Liu, Business Development Manager Asia-Pacific at MOCOM, highlights the aesthetic and tactile benefits of Altech® PC ECO, stating, "Thanks to Altech® PC ECO, the protective cover offers an elegant appearance and a pleasing feel." Furthermore, the material's versatility allows for various color options, including an attractive transparent version, devoid of any black speckles, despite being crafted entirely from recycled materials.

The Fairphone 5 sets a new standard for sustainability, combining responsible material sourcing, fair working conditions, and an extended lifespan. Oscar Chang, Senior Mechanics Engineering Manager at Fairphone, emphasizes their commitment, "We not only provide the Fairphone 5 with a 5-year warranty but also ensure software updates for at least eight years. Additionally, we integrate recycled and Fairtrade-certified materials, such as Fairtrade gold, into our supply chain whenever possible.”

This dedication to sustainability has earned Fairphone recognition, as evidenced by the GLOMO Award "Best Mobile Innovation for Climate Action" in the "Tech4Good" category for the Fairphone 5. The prestigious award, presented by the GSMA, underscores the impact of collaborations like the one between Fairphone and MOCOM in driving positive change within the smartphone industry.

MOCOM will be exhibiting its sustainable portfolio at Fakuma 2024 in Friedrichshafen. The company can be found at stand 4206 in hall 4 from October 15 to 19.
