MOCOM: Bio-based compounds for lighting applications

Hamburg, Germany, September 3, 2025 – At this year’s K trade fair in Düsseldorf, MOCOM will present innovative biopolymer-based materials for lighting applications. With the new grades Alcom® LD BIO HTC and LG BIO HTC, MOCOM is launching sustainable alternatives that combine high technical performance with excellent optical quality.
The compounds were specifically developed for demanding applications such as light guides, bezels or decorative interior elements in vehicles. Their media resistance was successfully tested according to the specifications of a leading automotive manufacturer.
The materials also meet the requirements for outdoor applications – confirmed by successful testing such as the Florida/Kalahari long-term weathering tests under real environmental conditions.
In addition, the biopolymers offer superior resistance to chemicals and media compared to standard polycarbonate – making them especially reliable for demanding automotive and outdoor applications. They are free of Bisphenol A, demonstrate birefringence levels comparable to PMMA and support design flexibility with outstanding light diffusion and transmission properties.
“With Alcom® LD BIO HTC, we provide customers in the automotive, electro and electronics as well as lighting industries with a sustainable alternative – without compromising on performance or aesthetics. Our latest development proves that ecological responsibility and technical excellence can go hand in hand,” says Julian Meier, Product Specialist for Lighting at MOCOM. “With this advancement, we strengthen our position in the field of bio-based high-performance materials and contribute to the ongoing development of sustainable plastic applications.”
The sustainable alternatives within the MOCOM Lighting portfolio will be showcased at K 2025 in Düsseldorf, from October 8–15. Together with its sister companies ALBIS and KRAHN Chemie. MOCOM will be exhibiting at the joint booth in Hall 6, Booth A62.
